Pants on parade

I was supposed to be making practical stuff today... But then I started thinking about see-through skirts with big knickers underneath.  As you do.

I wondered if it might be a look I could pull off.  I've never been one to shy away from out-there oufits, so I figured why the hell not, grabbed some star-print tulle, some leftover ivory dupion silk for a waistband, and got sewing...

I love the way the concept of having your knickers on display is significantly sexed-down by having used a demure, princess-y fabric, and as a result I don't feel that it comes across as a slutty outfit (please correct me if I'm wrong here!), or even particularly sexy for that matter.  In fact I think it looks quite sweet.

Even though my entire bottom is on show.

  1. LOVE it! I dare you to wear this in a public situation. Really pretty tulle - such a romantic look!

  2. i was holding my breath hoping you made your own version. i think it looks so pretty, truly. i LOVE this idea and i wish i had the cajones (or rather, the proper undies?) to pull it off. you're making me eye some drapey black chiffon, though...

since you accepted dare the first, i further officially dare you to do it as a MMM.

    1. Do it do it!! A black chiffon skirt would be delicious... especially with some cleverly placed applique..?

The dare is ON! I hereby declare that I, Elisalex, will wear my see-through skirt in public during MMM and post evidence of its outing.

I extend my dare to all of you too - wear an outrageous me-made something, or make something outrageous and wear it in public... not just for the sake of being outrageous, but for the sake of all those amazing outfits you dream about wearing/making but don't because "I'd probably never wear it out" !!!

    1. Glad to hear you like the fabric, less glad to hear you're not a fan of the skirt, but I guess it's a pretty controversial design ;) and this world would be a pretty boring place if we all agreed!

I truly appreciate any feedback, but I do think it's a little cheeky to leave a negative comment anonymously...

  5. I completely disagree with the 'anonymous' comment above mine Elisalex! I think this skirt is sweetness personified and if I had one (and your figure to boot) I would wear it every week ;o) Can't wait to see you wearing it in public during MMM'12. It's a totally inspired make, I love it!

  6. Anonymous needs a swift smack to the head. NO SLUTTY NO WAY! It's the CUTEST! I actually squealed when I saw it. If I had your fanny I'd be parading everywhere in that skirt! I suppose if you were feeling a little shy you could always do short shorts too. I really, really love this and I love that you translated a trend I've been loving to reality.

    2. Thank you for your lovely comment. Just in case you don't see my reply - it is super easy to change your serger thread if you cut the thread close to the spool and then tie the thread of the new spool to the old thread. You just have to kind of gently sew until they come through. You'll have to thread the needle because the knot may get stuck in the eye but it takes less than 5 minutes to do it! Or just stick to red. Either way.

  7. Arghmazing. I am pretty jealous of this outfit. You look totally HAWT!! I think it is a really thoughtful and pretty version of being sexy. Way more appropriate than inappropriate mid driffs, short shorts, cleavage and muffin tops. Let's face it, some knickers should be on display.

  8. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make everyone mad!! I just don't like the idea of letting everybody see my knickers!! Kinda gross to me!
I left it anonymous because I don't have a blog or profile but i guess I should of left a name!!
    I am sorry!

    1. Thank you Sallie! And not to worry - I'm not mad at all - everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm well aware that a see-through skirt might not be most people's first choice of evening attire!

I do find it interesting, however, how it can be seen as quite shocking to wear a skirt that shows one's knickers, but wearing hot pants and even skimpy bikini's for that matter, is much less taboo. Funny how we place different standards of dress and bodily coverage to different social situations.

I really appreciate you coming back to elaborate on your comment and leave your name, thank you!

    2. I think that double standard is really interesting too! I work with teenagers and have been truly shocked by how much of their cheeks are on display in the shorts they wear (albeit usually with tights but even those tend to be open lace-work), I'd probably feel them same about them turning up in a see-through skirt too but I think it has a lot to do with what is appropriate for their age.

I like the romantic see-through skirt look because it contrasts elegance with a certain risque attitude but I would prefer it with specially designed shorts or panties to accompany the skirt - a twin-set if you like! I think regular panties would be pushing the boundaries for daywear. I own an unlined lace cheongsam that I love but have not worn because I've no idea what underwear to wear with it. I always like the 70s look of long length shirt-waister open over short-shorts and used to have a similar outfit in my teens (which being the 90s, my friend's thought was weird, lol).

  10. Hello, Would you care to help me a bit? I'm going to sew a skirt, and I really liked the shape of this one, what kind of pattern do I use? is the base circular, or rectangular?
