Finally something practical!

After having failed miserably at my Monday morning plan of sewing up some easy wearing bits and instead getting way too carried away with star-print tulle and sheer skirts, I swiftly made up for it by whipping up - and by whipping up I literally mean it took about as long as it takes to whip cream - a super easy, super practical black viscose jersey dress.

Scoop neck, drapey fit and quarter circle full length skirt.  Simple as that.  I don't even really have much else to say except that it is beyond comfortable, makes me feel as though my legs go on forever and I'm going to make at least a million more in all kinds of colour/skirt combinations.  In fact, right now I'm thinking about this dress in a certain aztec jersey... What do you reckon, Marie?!

  1. How do you manage to get such a perfect balance between casual and chic?!? You look gorgeous! And yes, Aztec jersey and this dress were made for each other! How many metres do you think you'd need? Work's been really busy so didn't manage to get to the market today, but I will happily go very soon ;o)

    1. Thank you Marie! Don't worry the aztec jersey is not pressing - whenever you have the time :) I used 3 metres for this one and I would gladly make one for you too as a thank you!! xxx

  2. Impressive that you can whip up a gorgeous dress like this in as much time as making whipped cream! Can you teach me :) I'm loving the black maxi dress. Nothing is more sexy and sophisticated than black and long dresses

    1. Thank you - and it's easy once you get into a rhythm! All it takes is practice and getting to know your machine and various fabrics... If you live in London I'd be more than happy to recommend some great sewing classes! x

  4. Loves it! I'm heading to Mood in NYC this month and I wanted to go crazy on silk jersey since it's so cheap there. This dress would be AMAZING in silk jersey.

    1. Soooooo jealous! It's not so easy to come by great silk jersey here for cheap. I have some leftover chantilly lace from a wedding dress I just made for someone and was thinking of combining it with some silk jersey for the nightdress to end all nightdresses... Hmmmn I've never been to NYC so maybe a visit soon is in order! x

  5. Cool! Did you drape it or use a pattern?

    1. Thanks! The pattern for the bodice I cut myself, and the skirt is simply a 1/4 circle. x

  7. I love this. Very very tempted to make myself one. What is the bodice like. I'm presuming it is a bit t-shirt like? And did you belt it or is that white built into the dress?

    1. Yes, the bodice is loosely based on a t-shirt style, attached to a 1/4 circle skirt and elasticated at the waist seam. The wonderful thing about it is no fastenings! And yes I belted it xxx

    2. Ohh def going to try my best to copy this (if you dont mind...) just got to work out what to use for it. Im not sure my lovely striped fabric would work with a 1/4 skirt...hmm will have to get thinking. x

  8. ooooh, it looks both elegant AND comfortable! i think you should get bonus points for that. where these points are coming from I don't know but I do know that the dress looks great! a maxi dress style I'd probably actually wear.
