Instructions
CO 97 sts.
rows 1 - 6: work in Moss st (k1, *p1, k1 rep from * to end of row).
row 7 (RS): (k1, p1) 3 times, knit to last 6 sts, (p1, k1) to end.
row 8 (WS): (k1, p1) 3 times, purl to last 6 sts, (p1, k1) to end.
rep rows 7 & 8 until piece measures approx 20in/50cm in length.
next row (RS): (k1, p1) 15 times, k37, (p1, k1) 15 times.
next row (WS): k1, (p1, k1) 15 times, p35, (k1, p1) 15 times, k1.
rep these last 2 rows 2 more times (6 rows total of the Moss st shoulders).
next row (RS): BO 26 sts, (k1, p1) twice, k37, (p1, k1) 3 times, BO last 25 sts.
At this point you can either break off yarn and rejoin it, or using a crochet needle slip stitch over to your 46 live stitches.
Hood
cont in the same pattern of the 6 st moss st border at each end of row, stockinette st in between, until hood panel measures approx 8.5in/21cm.
You now want to slip 23 sts onto another needle (preferably a double-pointed needle, otherwise you'll have to slip them all a second time in order to get your needle points matching up when you fold the panel to close the hood seam).
Close hood seam with either a 3 needle bind-off or the kitchener stitch.
Fastening
Using a crochet hook, join your yarn at a shoulder corner, chain 10, rejoin with a slip stitch at the same point you started to create a loop. Break off yarn and sew in tails.
Using the photo as a guide, join yarn at a point on the opposite shoulder, chain 40, break off yarn leaving a few inches of yarn to spare.
Make a mini pom-pom with a scrap of a contrasting yarn, or the same yarn, and attach it securely to the long chain (I like a simple reef-knot). Now you can feed the chain through the loop and fasten it however loosely or tightly you want.

snug as a bug in a rug xx
ReplyDeleteThis is a neat terrific idea...thank you so very much for sharing...hugs, rose
ReplyDeleteThank you! I have a few friends due this fall and this will make a perfect baby present.
ReplyDeleteWhat would be a good substitute for the alpaca yarn?
ReplyDeleteyoung_knitter: you could really use anything as long as you can get the right gauge. Anything chunky-superchunky, even double strand a finer yarn, and I would advise using only 100% natural yarn as synthetics are not kind to babies skin. xxx
ReplyDeleteHi hun...couldn't find out where to email you (new to blogger!) but I've posted a link to this pattern on my blog, I hope thats ok? My blog is kinda just searching the internet for great stuff and then adding a few notes for the less experienced knitter like myself!! I really loved knitting this, I'm making a modern layette for my brother-in-law, it's perfect :)
ReplyDeleteHere's the link...if there's anything you aren't happy with please let me know!

Nice Pattern...thank you for sharing...:)
ReplyDeleteDear Elisa, can I have the measurements in centimeters of the small blanket with hood?
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! Anna
When binding off for the shoulders, COUNT, COUNT, COUNT!! Count how many stitches you've bound off and how many live stitches you have left! I forgot to count, thinking I was okay and didn't realize I made a mistake until AFTER I cut the tail off!! LUCKILY I just slipped the middle stitch in the next row and you can't tell I made a mistake, but I sure was smacking my forehead after I did it! Looks like it's still turning out well, though! I should be done in the next day or two. :)
ReplyDelete(By the way, sorry if this is my third of fourth posting of the same thing... my browser keeps refreshing)
DONE!! Now making a matching hat with leftover yarn! :)

Hello!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to knit this for my best friend, she's having a little boy who is expected to arrive in January. But I'm a beginner knitter and I don't understand your instructions.
Do you think this project is too difficult for a beginner?
Natalie
Natalie: I think this would be a great project for a beginner, teaching you a nice little handful of skills and techniques. You just need to be able to read a basic pattern. I found youtube indispensable when I was learning- anything I didn't understand I'd look for a video tutorial (the knit witch on youtube is great!) to take me through it. I hope this helps, let me know if not, I'd be happy to recommend some specific tutorials. Happy knitting! x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your encouragements Elisa!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to try, I'll update you when it's all done.
Thank you again!
Take care,
Natalie
When binding off at the shoulders do you bind off in the moss pattern? Or bind them all off knitwise? Or does it matter? I hope I know enough about knitting that this question makes sense! It's a beautiful pattern and I am looking forward to completing it!
ReplyDeleteAnon: I bind them off all knitwise... Just to make my life easier! But I'm sure you could do it in moss, and I wondered if one could do some sort of moss-kitchener stitch...? I found an explanation of this here - http://www.tricksyknitter.com/pages/posts/kitchener-stitch-89.php
ReplyDeleteLet me know how you go!
Hi Elisalex! Did you use the Lavender Melange color for this project? I want to try it for my best friend who is pregnant (and I'm hoping she has a girl!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern, I'm hoping I can get it right!
-Heidi
Heidi: I'm afraid I don't remember the exact shade I used... it was a beigey colour though, definitely not lavender. I would highly recommend you make this in a gender neutral colour though if you still don't know the sex, then you can add the pompom last minute in contrasting, gender apt colour!

ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic, thanks you for sharing it. I cannot wait to knit his for my friends' new baby. She will be so snuggly warm...
ReplyDeleteCurrently knitting this for my first grandchild - a boy -
ReplyDeletedue February 1st. It is wonderful I am using Bernat Alpaca Natural Blend in Tundra color (cocoa brown). Thanks for sharing this
delightful pattern!
Marge
I knit this for my new baby. When I wrap him in it he smiles up at me. He loves it, it's the only blanket that I use to swaddle him and put im to sleep. Thank-you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this lovely comment. It truly warms my heart to know it makes your baby smile and keeps him cosy! Thank you
DeleteI am a bit confused,I have gotten to the 20" length - next row says to K1,P1 15X, K37, K1,P1 15X = 67 stitches ~ What about the remaining 30 stitches???
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem. HEEEELP...
DeleteIf you are k1,p1 you are making two stitches. You do that 15 times, it's 30 stitches, then k37 then k1,p1 15 more times, is 30 more stitches, equaling 97 stitches.
DeleteThank you Lexi, quite right! Hope this clarifies... if not, please get in touch with me directly - elisalexdcp@hotmail.com

ReplyDeleteI really need to have this done by the end of February! Please help!!!
The person above this comment has the same problem. I just copied hers.....

Somewhere along the line I added two stitches, it looks like somewhere down in my first few rows... Will this be a problem? It's still an odd number so I figured I'd be ok if I just added two to whatever I needed to. I figured this would happen to me, considering I'm a newer knitter, but I hope it doesn't conflict with the pattern too much that I have to start over.
ReplyDeleteNot a problem at all, this is really the kind of pattern that doesn't need to be perfect seeing as it has no sleeves/close fit... as long as you can close the hood, you'll be fine! x
DeleteWhat are the finished dimensions of this blanket. I made one using bulky yarn but did not write them down. I am using an entirely different yarn this time and need to know which of my swatches to go by. I am getting no where near 3.5 sts. per inch.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for this!!
ReplyDeletehere is my take on it:
http://giardinoinunastanza.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/copertina-con-cappuccio.html
so cute!!!!!
I love this! it is adorable, My husband and I are expecting our first little bundle of joy, and I am starting my knitting for my precious. I have a question I am a little confused after you finish the blanket portion and you are starting the hood, you said cont in the same st of the 6st moss is that working rows 1-8? just a little confused, please help! Love the pattern though cannot wait to have my baby.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Tameika
Hi, this is my first pattern so may be getting a little confused!! But I have got to this row:
ReplyDelete"next row (RS): BO 26 sts, (k1, p1) twice, k37, (p1, k1) 3 times, BO last 25 sts"
Does this mean one side of the border around the hood should be wider than the other (i.e. 4 moss stitches on the first side and 6 on the other) or am I mis-reading this line?
Loving knitting this for my first niece/nephew!! Thank you for sharing!!
Jen
This is exactly what I was hoping to find! However, I'd like to do the border in another color. Do you have any suggestions as to how that can be done? I was considering leaving off the border then picking up the stitches at one edge and knitting in the border. I consider myself an intermediate knitter but a beginner at designing patterns. I'm not at all sure it could even be done this way.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for any help you could offer!
Julie
I love this pattern..so far. I am now at the BO 26 st Row and it seems the total stitches is now 98? I still have 97 stitches. Have I overlooked something? thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance!
KTS
Finished!! http://stitcherywitchery.tumblr.com/post/46181605997/i-have-been-knitting-for-a-couple-months-now-and
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting this now for my niece's baby. Just a beginner so far so good. This seems simple so I know it will turn out. Thank you for the pattern! Do you have anymore easy knits for baby and beginners?
ReplyDeleteWhat color, specifically, is this?
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry but I couldn't tell you - was such a long time ago and I didn't keep the ball band... I got the yarn from Loop in Islington (London) - maybe if you showed them the picture of the finished wrap and the brand of the yarn, they might recognise it better? Sorry not to be of much help, and good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Elisa, I am an experienced knitter, but I am having difficulty understanding the instructions for the final part of the hood. I have knitted it up to 8 1/2 ", The border on each side is 6 stitches. and the SS in between is 35 stitches. Exactly which 23 stitches do I slip onto another needle and what do I do with once I do? I could certainly just bind off the 47 stitches I currently have and then sew a seam to make a hood, but I think you may be wanting it made smaller so it pulls closer around the baby's head. Please advise.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Mary
Does anyone have the finished size for this, width specifically? I'm using bernat super chunky baby yarn (chenille) and I'm worried its going to be too big. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy baby was 6 lbs, 5 oz and 18" long. It wrapped around him just fine lengthwise but barely fit him width wise. It's not that wide.
ReplyDeleteOk, Thanks! Maybe I'll keep going with it and see how it turns out. I'm not so worried about the width but the hood being too big as a result.
ReplyDeleteThese would be perfect for hospitals! :D
ReplyDeleteMy border is curling at the bottom and I can't get it to stop! What did I do wrong? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi - what's the width on this piece. I.e, how many inches does the initial 97 stitches equal. Thanks. I'm hoping to make this for a friend!
ReplyDeleteHow wide is this blanket supposed to be?
ReplyDeleteI've realised that no one has answered this question and its been asked a few times, I actually read the comments just to find the answer, then I realised, Its actually pretty easy to figure out. She gives a gauge of 3.5 stitches per inch, so 97 stitches would be between 27 And 28 inches
ReplyDeleteOn the BO ROW, THE TOTAL STITCHES are 98 not 97. I see many people questioned this but there us no answer. I am a brand new knitter and am making this for my first grandchild. Please tell me what the correct stitches are. Thank you kindly.
ReplyDeleteI love this , do you have any suggestions on using any other yarn that is the same ply as baby alpaca. Need to knit for two babies and find this yarn a bit expensive.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea. Would've loved it if it would've included finished measurement. Keep up the good work :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, I did it for my niece and it´s beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHello!my yarn calls for 4-4.5mm needles.but I think I can also use 5mm needles. how many stitches should I cast on to get the length you suggest?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Maria
Hi there, I am not a knitter but would love to try and crochet this. Can you tell me the dimensions of your wrap? Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI have a friend working the baby snuggle wrap n can't get the bind off row to work when we add up the stitches bound off and the number of stitches worked we get a total of 98 stitches but her pattern instructions stated to cast on only 97 stitches. Is there a mistake in the instructions
ReplyDeleteHello ! it's so cute i love it ! but i can't find this yarn in France :S coul you tell me the measurements in centimeters of the small blanket with hood? it will be such a help :S thank you so much have a great day ! Lou
ReplyDeleteLove it! Wish there was a friendly print button....

ReplyDeleteHi there! Was thinking of making this a little bigger so baby can grow into it--would it work to just cast on a few more stitches and knit further up before making the hood? Thank you!
